LABOR DAY 2008 The first day of September brought with it the much coveted first school holiday! Labor Day brings a much needed rest from the first month of school and the rush of first of the year activities. Students and parents were afforded a chance to slow down with their families and enjoy the last blast of summer! We wish you all a blessed Labor Day weekend! ____________________________________ HORTON HAVEN 2008 Every September, high school students at MJCA begin gearing up for the annual retreat at Horton Haven Christian Camp. Sign up sheets and class competitions become the main topics of conversation. This year was no different. The class of 2009 was set to defend their title as class champions, and students were ready to spend a few days away from the regular routine of school. MJCA secondary spent Wednesday and Thursday (9/22-9/23) in the beautiful fall sunshine competing against one another and learning from our camp speaker, Josh Lindsey, about the responsibility we have as believers to love God with all our heart, mind and strength. Students participated in canoeing and the high adventure zip line during the day. At night, worship session was followed by the senior hay ride, annual camp fire (aka: marshmallow fight) and movie time. A final worship session and more class competitions round out Thursday, as students clean up and prepare for the ride home. Horton Haven always provides time for new friendships, fun and the invaluable opportunity to grow closer to God. ___________________________ HORTON HAVEN 2008 MEMORIES

CELEBRATING DUSTAN Last Wednesday afternoon (9/5), secondary and elementary students gathered outside near the football field for a very special ceremony. A beautiful oak tree was planted at the entrance to the stadium as a memorial to the life of Dustan Noble Gammon. As a member of the Class of 2008, Dustan exemplified all of the qualities we hope to see graduates of MJCA embody. His determination and spirit were exceptional, but more than that, Dustan's relationship with his Savior not only sustained him through his earthly battle, but also stood as a source of encouragement to everyone he came in contact with. Recognizing that Dustan is now at home and finally at peace, MJCA also ceremoniously retired the red Beatcancer t-shirts that students wore last year in support of his courageous fight. During the ceremony, Dustan's father, Kenny Gammon, spoke to the students about the significance of Dustan's life. He also communicated the story of a dream he had recently which reinforced the reality of heaven and the certainty of its existence. He challenged the students to cling to a strong faith, and to live life with a passion. Senior Ryan Dunnewold presented the family with a special photograph of I Corinthians 13 that he prepared as a gift for the family. Headmaster Greg Scheck and teacher, Jennifer Christensen, also addressed the students. Finally, the MJCA pep band played a special song they learned for the occasion. As a school family, we will always remember Dustan's life. His legacy will live on, and his impact will remain immeasurable! We love you, Dustan! Mr. Gammon addresses the students. Ryan said that Dustan's life perfectly exemplified that passage. __________________________________________________ HORTON HAVEN 2008 Class competitions create serious rivalries at Horton Haven each year. The seniors had their sights set on defending their title this year and becoming the first class to win two years in a row. However, the juniors had plans of their own. After a series of athletic match-ups and the now legendary talent show, the class of 2010 pulled through. Seniors re-enact The Lion King as their class talent. We are still not sure what the sophomores did for their class talent! The freshmen performed a class song. __________________________________________________ |
KINDERGARTEN LIFE AT MJCA Students in Mrs. Mulliniks's class complete their classwork. Mrs. Steele's class gets "crafty"! Students in Mrs. Moore's class brush up on their computer skills. _____________________________________ HORTON HAVEN 2008 WORSHIP Speaker Josh Lindsey MJCA boasts many talented and well-rounded students. Each year, a group of those students lead worship sessions at Horton Haven with praise music. This year, Stephen Hughes (senior) sang vocals. Dustin Hepburn (junior) played guitar while Phillip Lundy (ninth), played bass. Ethan Luffman (senior) played drums, but he also plays an integral role as sound man. These volunteers help set the tone for our speaker, and so often, their contributions go unappreciated. We wanted to say thanks to all of our hardworking musicians!! _____________________________________ HORTON HAVEN 2008 ADVENTURE ___________________________
