MJCA STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN AMERICAN MATHEMATICS COMPETITION

The last week of February, a local group of high school math students from Mt. Juliet Christian Academy headed to Cumberland University to compete with other Wilson County high schools in a nationally recognized math competition.  This group of Algebra II students, accompanied by math teacher, Richard Pickle, participated in the 75 minute contest by completing a series of 25 questions testing their range of comprehension and application.  MJCA sophomore, T.J. Roberts, placed 2nd overall in his category earning a $500 scholarship to Cumberland University.

What was once a small math contest centered in New York City, American Mathematics Competition has grown into a nation-wide event providing students the opportunity to test their skills, receive scholarships and tour local colleges and universities.  Last year, over 250,000 students participated from all over the nation and similar numbers are expected this year.  Wilson County was represented this year by Friendship Christian, Mt. Juliet Christian, Mt. Juliet High School and Watertown High School.

PRACTICAL LIVING

Mrs. Fordham's Practical Living course requires secondary students to stretch beyond the typical skills employed in a normal day of high school. Students finished their pillow projects this month and were more than happy to display their creative sleep aids. We only hope they don't use their newly made pillows in class!

PRESCHOOL PERFORMANCE ELEMENTARY CHAPEL

Elementary chapel last Wednesday (3/18) was an exciting place for MJCA's preschool students. Using their special homemade microphones, our youngest performers sang praise songs that they have been working on together. Braving a crowd of bigger and older students, our preschool group showed no fear! These beautiful voices remind all of us what is so precious about the kingdom of God!

The week of March 23-27 represents a much needed break from the school routine. Students are prepared to take family vacations, work extra hours, get caught up on school projects, or play important district ballgames. Maybe in all of the excitement, each of us can steal a few moments of relaxation as well. Have a happy and safe week!

OPERATION IMPACT SECONDARY

MJCA middle and high school students participated in a special joint chapel on Tuesday, March 31st. Corporal Ray Justice with the Wilson County Sheriff's Department presented to our students a new program implemented in our county called Operation Impact. Through a grant from the Governor's Highway Safety Office, our Wilson County law enforcement officers have to funds to promote safe driving and inform student drivers of the dangers of driving while intoxicated.

Each student was handed a Contract for Life, provided by SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions). This contract is to be reviewed by the parent, and the if both parties are willing to participate, signed and brought back to school to be kept on file. This contract represents a commitment between parent and child that will help to ensure the utmost safety while that child is driving.

We would like to thank Corporal Justice and the Wilson County Sheriff's Department for making our children's highway safety their mission!

ELEMENTARY LEGO ROBOT CLUB

Four elementary students in Mrs. Parker's third grade class formed a Lego Robot Club this year. Operating under the name MJCA R Men, this group of inventive students took on the challenge of building a robot that studies the climate. After a trip to Nashville's WKRN studio and an interview with the local weatherman, the project began. Using simple machines such as the wheel and axle, gears, and levers, these students constructed their robot. By adding weather instruments to their creation, the finished product is capable of reading temperature, air pressure and wind direction. Next year, this group plans on programming a computerized robot and competing with other teams across the state of Tennessee!

MJCA CELEBRATES PI DAY: 3/14/09

Rachel Haley and Bethany Caldwell, both seniors at MJCA, display their award winning pies in math class on Friday. Students in middle and high school brought in their most delicious creations in honor of one of the most famous math holidays on the calendar: Pi Day.

Pi is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of the circle to its diameter. The first Pi Day was officially celebrated in San Francisco in 1988, and the annual celebration has become a tradition for math enthusiasts and students ever since. This was certainly one day that all MJCA math students were glad to do their homework!

BUILDING THE UNIVERSE ELEMENTARY

Mrs. Moore's kindergarten class pose inside their homemade galaxy. Students worked to reconstruct the components of our galaxy within the classroom walls. Complete with planets, stars and black lights for effect, the enclosure gives these students the opportunity to "visit" space anytime they want! Most importantly, this is the type of activity that puts the wonder of God's creation at a child's fingertips.

CUDDLE UP WITH A BOOK NIGHT ELEMENTARY

On March 5, in honor of READ ACROSS AMERICA day, the MJCA PTO sponsored the annual Cuddle Up with a Book Night for preschool through elementary students and their families. Mrs. Hibbett, Mrs. Steele & her mother, and Mr. Spence read books and told stories to the children, who arrived in pajamas to settle in for a warm night by the "fire" and enjoy storytelling "under the stars." The event was a great success by providing fellowship for our MJCA families and by teaching our young children the importance of reading.

On Thursday, March 5th, MJCA National Honor Society hosted its annual Principal's Breakfast. This event celebrates the academic achievement of secondary students who have received Principals List honors all year. This year, the NHS was pleased to honor 24 students in grades 6-12.

Parents and students arrived Thursday morning to a breakfast catered by Houston's of Mt. Juliet. Secondary Principal Kathy Kitchen welcomed the group and expressed her congratulations to a very hard working group of young people. After breakfast and presentations, Headmaster Greg Scheck closed with a word of encouragement to the students to keep reaching for excellence. Congratulations to such an outstanding group of young people!

SAFE DRIVING ASSEMBLY SECONDARY

Officials from the Tennessee Department of Transportaion (TDOT) teamed up with the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) on Thursday morning (3/12) to deliver a cautionary message to MJCA student drivers. The message was simple: act responsibly and stay safe on the roads. Using a mix of heartwrenching stories from the highways of Tennessee and overwhelming statistics, the speakers delivered their message with searing accuracy. In addition to the need for responsibility, the students were also briefed on Tennessee laws, including the use of cell phones while driving and the "Move Over" law.

Tennessee Highway Patrolmen addressed the student body regarding the use of seat belts and caution while driving.

Students participated in a demonstration about how to navigate through a construction zone safely.

FIFTH GRADE MENTORS ELEMENTARY

Mrs. Mosier's fifth grade students participated in a very special computer project this month. Taking an MJCA third grade class under their wing, Mrs. Mosier's students taught these students how to use the Microsoft PowerPoint program. Together, these students created their own projects. Elementary Bible teacher, Patsy Cameron, was also involved in organzing this project. Not only did this collaboration pass on important computer skills, but it also served to develop valuable relationships among our elementary students.
