TESTING TIME AGAIN STANFORD ACHIEVEMENT

Elementary and secondary students at MJCA will be demonstrating their competence in a variety of disciplines this week (4/6-4/9) by completing the Stanford Achievement tests. Tests will be administered each day in this four day week for a two hour period. Student schedules will largely revolve around the completion of this testing. Scores allow administration to monitor student progress and the effectiveness of curriculum each year. Good luck to all of our students.

STRESS BUILDS AS END OF YEAR APPROACHES SECONDARY

April marks a transition into "crunch" time for students, especially seniors. As Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment classes come to a rapid conclusion, end of semester assignments and standardized testing begin to snowball. Students feverishly work through research projects and prepare for end of course exams. We will continue to lift our students up in prayer as they attempt to finish with excellence!

NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP NEWS

Each fall, MJCA juniors take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Students who meet the required score levels are advanced to the National Merit Scholarship Program. Any student who achieves entrance to this program is part of an elite group of students nationwide. The winners of National Merit Scholarships are the cream of the crop.

Mrs. Kathy Kitchen, high school principal, received word that one of our juniors, SarahBeth Walker, has met the requirements and has been entered in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program. Currently, she is among the 50,000 highest scoring participants of some 1.5 million program entrants from across the country. SarahBeth will find out in September her final standing in the program. Even if she does not advance to receive one of only 8,200 National Merit Scholarships handed out for 2010, her accomplishment to be named to the program is simply outstanding! Congratulations, SarahBeth!

COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG MIDDLE SCHOOL

Middle school students (6-8) left for a four day Colonial adventure over last weekend (4/23-4/26). Students and chaperones boarded a bus and traveled to Williamsburg to tour some of our most historic and cherished American monuments. Students were able to see the famed Williamsburg, along with several other important historical settlements: Yorktown and Jamestown. After the history lesson came play time in the form of Busch Gardens theme park. Everyone enjoyed a day of high flying roller coasters and thrill rides.

Most importantly, students enjoyed the chance to break away from the regular school routine and experience education outside the classroom walls! We want to thank Mr. Clendenning for organizing this trip for our middle school!

OCOEE ADVENTURE SENIOR TRIP 2009

MJCA seniors braced for adventure this last weekend on Senior Trip '09! On Friday (4/3), students and chaperones piled on a bus and headed for the Ocoee River for a weekend of relaxation and fun. On Friday, students arrived at the Welcome Valley Village and prepared for an afternoon of fishing and games. Mr. Kenneth Mitchell helped end the day by preparing a cook-out for the students on Friday evening.

On Saturday morning, students awoke prepared to brace the cold waters of the Ocoee for some rafting. After an afternoon of harrowing thrills and a friendly game of paintball, seniors were ready to begin the journey home. Thanks to Coach Jones for organizing another memorable trip for the Class of 2009!

LEADERSHIP WILSON GRADUATION SECONDARY

On Sunday (4/19), five MJCA juniors were honored by taking part in a graduation ceremony for the Leadership Wilson organization. This group, in existence since 1993, has as its mission to identify, train and motivate young people in the area of community leadership.

Our students were selected to be a part of this program during their junior year of high school, and they comprise a 30 student group from the Wilson County high schools. These students were selected on the basis of personal qualifications and potential for service all determined during an official application process. After deciding upon membership for each year, the Leadership Wilson Board of Directors plans and conducts full-day sessions each month for nine months. One Wednesday every month, students attend these sessions covering topics like agriculture, business and safety, industry, education, public safety, heath care and social services, state government, local government and lifestyles.

The purpose of this respected organization is to provide a large number of well-trained, highly motivated citizens to assume leadership roles in civic, education, and economic development groups. We are especially proud our outstanding young people who were selected and participated in this program!

COMMUNITY SERVICE OUTREACH SECONDARY

Mt. Juliet Christian Academy secondary students participated in a community outreach program last Thursday and Friday, April 23rd and 24th.  Class groups were dispatched throughout the Mt. Juliet and Nashville area to lend a helping hand in a variety of ways.

The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge located in downtown Nashville was one of the first stops for MJCA middle school students.  The Hope Lodge is a facility that houses up to forty cancer patients at time while they are undergoing treatments in local hospitals.  Students were able to perform a variety of services for the facility management including cleaning the kitchen, windows and carpet.  Another group of students swept the grounds assuring that all trash was picked up.  One of the highlights for the middle schoolers was being able to interact with many of the patients and discover the determined spirit present in those who are suffering.

MJCA sophomores helped sort disaster packages for Feed the Children in downtown Nashville.  Students formed an assembly line packing each box with donated goods that sustain families in crisis.  Another group helped inspect packed boxes before shipment.  In Mt. Juliet, a second group of sophomores was dispatched to Providence Place Assisted Living to assist residents with cleaning and grounds upkeep.  The Mt. Juliet Library also used a small group of students to dust bookshelves and clean windows.

In addition to these outstanding organizations, the entire secondary was involved during the two day period in clearing and cleaning several local state parks.  Long Hunter, Bledsoe and Charlie Daniels Park all saw crews of MJCA students armed with rakes and shovels ready for labor.  Trails were cleared, trash picked up and beds were weeded as these beautiful parks prepare for summer visitors.

Mt. Juliet Christian Academy students learned the value of labor over this two day period, and they also gained an appreciation for some amazing groups of people who are providing services to people in need in our area everyday.  We are thankful for the ministry of outreach and grateful to have been able to participate.

EASTER 2009

There is always a tremendous amount of excitement that surrounds the long weekend of Easter. Students look forward to the four day week preceding the holiday, and they look forward to the family traditions associated with this special day. Elementary classes conduct egg hunts and parties to mark the occasion.

However, there is such a deeper connection to this time that we share as Christians. We find strength in the knowledge that what is unjustified has become justified; what is unforgivable has been forgiven, and what was unattainable has been attained. We stand in awe at the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Most importantly, we receive gratefully the gift fully extended. May you and your family have the warmest of celebrations this year!
