COMMUNITY SERVICE THRIFTSMART MJCA freshmen helped sort inventory for Thriftsmart. _____________________________________ MJCA STUDENTS MAKE THEIR MARK ON THE ACT
One of the points of emphasis this year for MJCA high school students has been college admission testing preparation. ACT Prep elective courses were added to the schedule for sophomores and juniors. English teachers have emphasized reading comprehension strategies, and spring secondary testing shifted from the traditional Stanford Achievement Tests to the ACT Plan and Explore. In addition, MJCA juniors recently spent a week participating in an ACT prep course led by instructors from the Hermitage Learning Center. Results from the February ACT test date show that this curriculum emphasis is making a difference. The composite average for our students in February was a 23. Additionally, MJCA boasted 16 out of 18 test takers meeting the ACT English benchmark. Fourteen out of 18 met the ACT Reading benchmark. We will continue to monitor the progress and achievement of our MJCA secondary students as they work to secure admission and scholarships to the universities and colleges of their choice. _____________________________________ MJCA ELEMENTARY BOOK CLUB
Members of the MJCA Elementary Book Club enjoyed a year-end luncheon on Tuesday, April 20. The first through fifth graders spent their lunch time enjoying food from Chick-fil-A with their Book Club member friends while coloring on the white paper "tablecloths", listening to music and reading excerpts from books they have discussed during this year's Book Club activities. Each student also received their choice of a small prize or book for being a part of the Book Club. Parent volunteers are already considering new books for next year's Book Club meetings. Information on next school year's MJCA Elementary Book Club meetings and planned readings will be sent out to all Elementary students & their parents as soon as it becomes available. Join the MJCA Elementary Book Club next year and see what all the fun's about! _____________________________________

COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY 2010 The month of April was ushered in with a secondary wide community service day for students at MJCA. All grades were involved with different ministries throughout the Nashville area, as teams of students and teachers worked together to serve our community. Ms. Dunbar, community service coordinator, worked to facilitate opportunities for our student body on this second annual service day, and based on the responses from teachers and students, it was a successful and productive day. Seniors took their last group trip to Wherry Housing in Smyrna to work on their capstone project: restoring a house for a needy family. They have worked hard all year to build the foundation for future classes by participating in both demolitiona and restoration labor. This house, when completed, will stand as a testament to the power of God through ministry, and it will also serve as a great legacy for MJCA. Other classes at MJCA were involved with all types of ministries in the Nashville area. Our middle school worked with Feed the Children and Providence Assisted Living. Our high school students worked at Thriftsmart, Longhunter State Park, and Sports4All. Their work ranged from clean up and maintenance to working with kids and adults with special needs. Thanks to Ms. Dunbar for planning such a memorable day, and thanks to all who participated in making this day a success! What a joy to serve the Lord. Students came dressed in their finest to celebrate this annual rite of passage. After a wonderful dinner, parents and students gathered to watch another MJCA tradition, Senior Walk. Each senior, escorted by a special loved one, was introduced to the audience along with their respective honors and accomplishments. Later, the MJCA Junior Prince and Princess, along with the MJCA Senior Prom King and Queen were all revealed. Kaitlynn Lawrence and Caleb Wagler took junior honors, while Kelsey Wilsher and Rahul Vanmali were voted Prom 2010 Queen and King. We would like to thank Mrs. Dana Spence for all of her hard work and effort to plan for this year’s festivities. What a great night of memories! _________________________________________________
